Avoided Emissions
Avoided
emissions
Every megawatt-hour we generate from water and sunlight is energy that does not come from fossil fuels. Our operations avoid thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year, and this contribution is backed by internationally recognized certificates.
Contribution by
plant
Our four hydroelectric plants generate 148 GWh of renewable energy per year. Each one helps reduce emissions and backs its generation with CER or I-REC certificates.
Contribution of each of our hydroelectric plants:
- Secacao 74,820 t
- Choloma 22,365 t
- Candelaria 18,685 t
- Guayacán 5,963 t

CER · CERs
These are units issued under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol. They certify that a project has reduced or avoided greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a verifiable way.
Each CER is equivalent to 1 ton of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) that was avoided or not released into the atmosphere thanks to the project. These certificates allow companies, organizations, and countries to demonstrate their commitment to international climate change mitigation goals.

International Renewable Energy Certificates
I-REC · I-RECs
These are international certificates issued under the I-REC Standard that certify the generation and consumption of electricity from renewable sources in global markets. Each I-REC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity produced and delivered to the grid.
They allow companies, organizations, and countries to support their sustainability goals and demonstrate that the energy they consume comes from clean sources, thereby contributing to the indirect reduction of emissions associated with electricity consumption.
- Certify generation from renewable sources
- Recognized in global markets
- Support the sustainability goals of companies and countries
